ances out of workplace. Westerners often feel uncomfortable when privacy gets involved in work. On the contrary, Chinese regard work as part of life. Business deals and efficiency are reached based on how close the personal relationship can be.
Some westerners complain that they can hardly hear "objections" or true opinions at meeting, but the plan just can't be executed afterwards. It is believed China and the regions around are remarkably influenced by "Confucianism". At workplace, the culture is elaborated into some typical behaviors like "People-caring" and "Obedience". That philosophy believes its' impolite to have others feel "lose face" in public, especially when the person is a superior. You can see the similar situation in Japan and Korea. A scenario in many Japanese TV programs might be familiar to you: male colleagues go drinking after duty-hours. Only after you build private relationship with your colleagues, can you hear what they really think about. That's also the reason why "personal relationship" at workplace is a very critical factor in this culture, though it's strange and uncomfortable to some westerners.
Be cautious that relationship may also cause nepotism or ethical and legal issues. Personal relationships might be abused for corruption or serious illegal deals prohibited by laws of the investors’ original countries. To hire a local lawyer and learn basic laws are definitely requisite for a manager to distinguish those permitted from those prohibited.
