a with complex religion beliefs, China is a secular society since the nation's core value is deeply marked by Confucianism, which pursues satisfaction in this existing life. Not like India, Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia, China does not have a statutory holiday legislated specially for any certain religion.
Nevertheless, family reunion is dominant in this culture. Some significant holidays like “Middle-Autumn” and “Spring Festival (Same as Chinese New Year)” are regarded holy times by most Chinese people. That’s also the opportunity for the employer to express “considerate and acknowledgement” to the employees at those moments of the year. Being a convention, small gifts or petty cash means congratulations. It’s offensive to neglect those festivals. Vice versa, being a result of cultural communication, western traditions and holidays are being accepted by more and more Chinese. Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Easters are becoming parts of popular life-styles and opportunities for team-building and improving understanding between local and foreign staff. To some degree, to respect convention is an essential element in employee engagement and team building.
3.4 Leadership & Teamwork
I was educated in a western culture and have been working for MNCs all through my career, thus fully understand the rationales and benefits behind democracy and collective decision-making. Yet, traditionally, teamwork has a different interpretation in eastern culture, so do leadership. A common recognition is in China, Japan & Korea, seniority and experiences are significant factors in teamwork. Decision-making and planning depend on the leaders instead of group collaboration.
